MOLESKINE
I finally got around to scanning and uploading a bunch of sketchbook pages to Flickr.
Have a look.

All I can tell you about this “project” right now is that I’m laying down a pencil sketch each day (one card per day) and then finishing them at my leisure (Sharpie and Microns .005, .01 and .05). At any given time I have 3-5 of these in production”. A number of people have asked “What are you going to do with them?” Honestly I’m not exactly sure at the moment but I have a few ideas simmering. Some I like more than others so,they may get special treatment at some point. And yes. The plan is to do 365 of them. I’ve worked it into my routine fairly well so as of right now it feels like 365 will actually happen. They are called THUBP!(s). More on that later… maybe. You can see a few up close in the original post here: 4×6 – The Beginning. I’m not sure if I’m going to post every one up somewhere yet. I haven’t decided.

One of today’s creations… this simple Italian loaf. I had planned on using this for French Toast tomorrow but the way the kids are hovering around it waiting for it to cool I doubt it will be around… 2 loaves of Rosemary Olive Oil are rising.

A collaboration with Penelope, this print was made for the Toys in the Attic ‘09 Show. She’s not happy about the “crazy eye”.

One of the things I did over the break was cut down all the piles of usable scrap paper in my shop into more uniform sizes and shapes. As a result I have a fairly large pile of 4×6 cards (over 500 I’d guess) now that I’ve been doing drawings on. Once I have a decent batch I’ll figure out what to do with them… maybe a zine, maybe a collection of prints… don’t know… not going to make plans other than to fill as many of these 4×6 cards as I can and see what shakes out of it.
Here are a few so far:

DANG! 4 friggin’ months since my last update. Where does the time go?
I’ll tell you where… The first few months were eaten alive by this little project for Harley-Davidson.
We shot a bunch of retro style pin-up images featuring Victoria Secret Supermodel, Marisa Miller (check out her better blog entry) and offered them up trough a variety of channels as a way to show our Troops that we appreciate what they do for us. You can see more and give thanks yourself by visiting the website:

As I casually move on to the next topic as if a photo-shoot with a supermodel was no big deal, understand that it was an interesting experience given that all my shoots to this date have been with real riders. Every day people. Getting them to look natural on camera isn’t always easy and can take a lot of time. A professional supermodel was a completely different experience and really made me appreciate what a pro can do. Thanks Marisa!

Next came another Harley project that I’m still in the middle of and not at liberty to discuss right now. Could be huge though. Stay tuned.

While all that was going on I managed to pump out a few cool rock posters with Squad19 (click for larger image):
AND
With a little help from my friends I was able to plan this TOYS IN THE ATTIC show. You should come. Bring a toy!

Art, Design, Events, Food, Motorcycles

This print is now available through the Squad19 Etsy shop. It’s begging to live in your home. Visit the listing for some detail shots of the texture and glittery details. Lovely!!!
These are some art prints that are prototypes of sorts. Little design fire drills I created for myself. The seeds of a larger project idea. Limit myself to a pre-determined size and 2 color combo. Red and black for now because I happen to have a gallon of each.
This first one “Sweet Bean” was for a coffee themed art print show. Sometimes when you say a word over and over again it starts to sound rediculous or that it has no meaning. One day riding aorund by myeslf somehwere and thinking about what to do for this show I got stuck on the word “BEAN”.

12 x19 / S&N edition of 40
Based on looking to make the most of my time and resources I decided to gang print “Sweet Bean” with “Scoot” done for Los Vesparados scooter themed art show. I don’t currently own a scooter but I’ve ridden them and do enjoy them. I’ll probably get one at some point. If not for myself for one of the kids. Scooters are fun!

12x9 / S&N edition of 35
While printing the “Sweet Bean” and “Scoot” prints I was thinking that I really like this size and 2 color format. I’m going to print more art prints this size and with the same color combo. A few days later I was sitting at work and I had a little bit of free time at the end of the day. I knew I had a screen at home that could accommodate a set of these red and black art prints if I bust out something before I leave the office for the day. So I dug around on my computer to find an image to start with and landed on Evel Knievel. The exercise being, make something that looks cool fast. Try not to over think anything. Just run with your gut, hammer out a design, go home and print it. Well I ended up with these next two.

12x9 / S&N edition of 19
I always though Evel Knievel was super bad-ass and wanted the SSP Stunt Chopper but never had one. These prints along with more Red and Black prints will be available through Squad19 in the near future.

12x9 / S&N edition of 19
I’ve been invited to participate in an Alice In Wonderland themed art show/print exchange so after much consideration I decided to do a Cheshire Cat print. These will show up on Squad19.com at some point for sale but for now this is how it all went down.
I saw this coloring book laying on the floor opened to this page one day so I snapped this photo:

Then I eyeballed it with a partially dried out brush pen to get this rough ink:

I started messing with the rough ink a bunch thinking I might want the print to be pretty rough or sketchy overall. I also started incorporating some texture via this scan of a pair of Penelope’s old pants.

I wasn’t completely digging where the sketchy looking illustrtaion was taking me so I went back and inked some more solid lines. All of this is taking place in Photoshop by the way, and I have yet to figure out how to satisfactorily document that process for a post such as this. So this is the clean inked illustration:

I ended up using the rough ink in some layers and the final ink as a finish layer. LETS PRINT IT!!!!
Skipping all the screen prep… boring.
COLOR 1: This is metallic silver with some yellow and extender base mixed in. The flowers are from one of my random sketch book pages.

Color 2: Process Yellow (actually Sherwin Williams latex house paint). This is the rough ink layer with some parts of another random sketchbook page.

Color 3: Magenta (also house paint) Penelope insisted she get to try so I let her pull a few test prints.

Monkey see monkey do.

Usually when I print during the day the kids color or paint… they don’t really pull the squeegee (yet). This magenta layer is the rough ink plus Penelope’s pants.

Color 4: Cyan (more house paint) This layer is pretty much just texture from the pants scan. Griffin went upstairs to watch Monster House for the 512th time so Penenlope got to painting…

Color 5: Black (speedball) This is the clean inked illo with a little bit of grit and a frame added.

That’s it. We’re done. Final print is 12×13, Signed and numbered edition of 50. Now get back to work!
